Foundation 1976
BSO was founded in 1976 as professional association for supervision and practice teaching.
Since 1995 its name is Berufsverband für Supervision, Organisationsberatung und Coaching(BSO), i.e. Professional association for supervision, organisational consultancy and coaching(BSO).

Number of members
About 1000 individual members and 13 training institutes, having an institutional membership.

Structure
BSO is an association according to Article 60 ff of the Swiss Civil Code.
The main decisive bodies are:

• General assembly.
• Board consisting of four members and the chair, responsible for the strategic management of the association.
• BSO-office with director for the operational affairs.
• Permanent committees for:
• Registration of new members and accreditation of training institutes
• Editorial staff for the BSO-Journal (a quarterly)
• Professional policy
• Quality development

Concept of supervision
Supervision, as defined in the BSO mission statement, is a special form of work-orientated consultancy for individuals, groups and work teams.
It helps to improve professional and personal skills optimising the quality of the professional activities.
Organisational Consultancy is a form of planned change that includes the entire organisation or its sectors, involving all levels of hierarchy and all individuals in it.

Target groups
Qualified professionals in the profit and non-profit sector.

Training of supervisors
The BSO certifies at present 22 training programs offering a diploma in either Supervision or in Organisational Consultancy or in coaching. A few training institutes offer combined programs, demanding a longer duration of the program.
The programs are based on different methods and they accentuate various fields of application. The trainees of these programs qualify for a trainee membership of BSO, becoming a full member after having successfully completed their training.

Goals
The main targets have been put down in a 10-point program in the BSO mission statement, the latter containing also a code of ethics.
The main issues of the association in short terms:

• Safeguarding, furthering and representation of interests related to the profession
• Promotion of understanding of supervision/ organisational counselling / coaching
• Furthering of quality assurance (e.g. by forming control and intervision groups)
• Realisation of protection of title
• Establishing of ties between supervision, organisational counselling, organisational development and coaching
• Creating of guidelines for questions related to the profession (certification, fees, contracts)
• Observation of socio-political and market-economical trends
• Promotion of professional exchange
• Contacts and exchange with related associations
• Promotion of development of an international network
